Palm Sunday: The Arrival of the King

This day marks Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. The name “Palm Sunday” comes from the palm branches the crowd waved as they welcomed Him, which was a symbol of victory and royalty.

Zechariah 9:9; Luke 19:38

Zech.9.9 – Rejoice greatly, O people of Zion! Shout in triumph, O people of Jerusalem! Look, your king is coming to you. He is righteous and victorious, yet he is humble, riding on a donkey–even on a donkey’s colt.

The crowd waved palm branches and shouted, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!” They celebrated Jesus as their long-awaited King, not knowing He came not to overthrow Rome but to overthrow sin.

Palm Sunday gets its name from those branches, the symbols of the victory they hoped for. But Jesus, sitting on a donkey, showed a kingdom built not on show of force but on humility and peace.

The crowd shouted “Hosanna,” believing Jesus had come to be a political king. But He entered not on a warhorse but on a donkey, a sign of humility and peace. They wanted a conqueror for Rome; He came to conquer sin and death.

As you read this, ask yourself: Am I welcoming Jesus Christ on my own terms, or am I ready to accept Him as He truly is? Remember, He did not come to give you what you want right now; He came to give you what you eternally need.

The people wanted a conqueror; He came to be a sacrifice for the world. Today, you face the same choice. Will you welcome Jesus as a king who fits your plans, or will you submit to Him as the King who saves your soul? He did not come to give you what you want in the moment. He came to give you what you eternally need.

Lay down your palms and your pride. Let Him truly reign in your heart.
