15 Clear Signs You Are Sitting Under a False Teacher or Pastor

The Bible warns us repeatedly: “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves” (Matthew 7:15). But how do you recognize them when they speak like Christians, carry Bibles, and stand behind pulpits?

False teachers and pastors are dangerous because they mix just enough truth with deadly error. They don’t always look evil; they often look successful, anointed, and charismatic. But their fruit tells the real story.

Here are 15 clear signs that the person teaching you may be a false shepherd.

1. They Preach a Different Jesus

The false teacher presents a Jesus who doesn’t match the Bible. Their Jesus wants you rich, never sick, and always comfortable. He doesn’t ask you to carry a cross, deny yourself, or suffer for righteousness.

  • What they say: “Jesus came to make you wealthy and remove every problem.”
  • What the Bible says: Jesus said, “In this world you will have trouble” (John 16:33) and “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily” (Luke 9:23).

2. They Twist Scripture to Fit Their Agenda

They use the Bible, but they misuse it. Verses are taken out of context to support their teachings. They ignore passages that don’t serve their message and magnify those that do.

  • Example: Using Malachi 3:10 about tithing to demand money while ignoring Malachi’s message about justice and caring for the poor.

3. They Are Obsessed with Money

Money is a constant theme. Teachings always circle back to sowing seeds, giving offerings, and financial breakthroughs. Their messages are designed to open your wallet, not your heart.

  • Red flags: Constant appeals for funds, pressure to give more than you can, and a lavish lifestyle for the pastor while members struggle.

4. They Live in Extreme Luxury While Members Suffer

The pastor flies private jets and wears designer clothes, but the congregation can’t pay school fees. This contradicts the heart of a true shepherd who sacrifices for the sheep.

  • Biblical contrast: Paul worked as a tentmaker to support himself and not burden the church (Acts 18:3). Jesus had no place to lay His head (Matthew 8:20).

5. They Demand Unquestioning Loyalty

A false teacher views any question as rebellion. They claim that “touching God’s anointed” means you cannot question or challenge them. This is a control tactic to silence discernment.

  • What they say: “If you speak against my authority, you are speaking against God.”
  • What the Bible says: The Bereans were commended for examining the Scriptures daily to verify Paul’s teachings (Acts 17:11).

6. They Lack Accountability

No one can correct them. They have no spiritual covering or board of elders who can speak into their lives. They are a law unto themselves.

7. They Focus on Experience Over Scripture

Feelings, dreams, visions, and “thus saith the Lord” moments replace solid biblical teaching. The experience becomes the authority, not the Word of God.

8. They Prophesy for Profit

They sell prophecies. Special prayers, deliverance sessions, and personal prophecies come with price tags. The gift of God is being marketed for gain.

  • Scripture: Peter told Simon the Sorcerer, “May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money!” (Acts 8:20).

9. They Are Sexually Immoral

Behind closed doors, they abuse their position for sexual gratification. They seduce female members, claiming “God told them” to have special relationships or “spiritual marriages.”

  • Warning: A true man of God flees sexual immorality and protects the flock from predators.

10. They Isolate You from Family and Other Believers

They plant seeds of distrust against your family and friends. They want you to cut ties with anyone who might question their authority or open your eyes to the truth.

11. Their Character Does Not Match Their Message

They preach holiness but live in sin. They preach love but are harsh and controlling. Their private life contradicts their public ministry. The fruit of the Spirit, love, joy, peace, and kindness, is missing.

12. They Add Works to Grace

Salvation becomes about what you do, not what Christ has done. You are made to feel that your giving, attendance, and obedience earn God’s favor. Grace is replaced by performance.

13. They Exploit the Vulnerable

They target the desperate, the sick, the poor, and the broken. They promise miracles to those who give their last penny. They prey on weakness rather than protecting it.

14. They Are Proud and Unapproachable

A true shepherd has a servant’s heart. A false teacher demands recognition, titles, and special treatment. They are offended when not treated with the honor they feel they deserve.

15. They Produce No Lasting Spiritual Fruit in Your Life

After years under their teaching, are you more like Jesus? Do you love God more? Are you growing in patience, kindness, and self-control? Or are you more fearful, more financially strained, and more dependent on them?

  • The test: Jesus said, “By their fruit you will recognize them” (Matthew 7:16).

How to Protect Yourself

  1. Know Your Bible. You cannot spot a counterfeit if you don’t know the real thing. Study Scripture daily.
  2. Cultivate a Personal Relationship with Jesus. Let your connection to God be direct, not filtered through a man.
  3. Stay Connected to Healthy Believers. Isolation is dangerous. Stay in community with mature Christians who can speak truth into your life.
  4. Test Everything. 1 John 4:1 says, “Test the spirits to see whether they are from God.”

A true pastor leads you to Jesus. A false pastor leads you to himself. Make sure you know which one you are following.
