7 Biblical Signs You Have a Prophetic Gift

Have you ever had a strong feeling about something that later came true? Or perhaps you’ve had a dream that felt like more than just a dream? Many people, especially in today’s spiritually aware world, wonder if they have a prophetic gift.

The gift of prophecy is a very real spiritual gift mentioned in the Bible (1 Corinthians 12:10). But it’s crucial to understand what it is and what it isn’t. It’s not about fortune-telling or witchcraft; it’s about speaking God’s heart to build, encourage, and comfort others (1 Corinthians 14:3).

So, how can you know if what you’re experiencing is a genuine prophetic gift? Here are 7 biblical ways to know

1. It’s Rooted in a Relationship with God, Not Just a “Psychic Feeling.”

The source of a true prophetic gift is the Holy Spirit. This means it flows from a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. The “knowing” you feel is often accompanied by a sense of God’s presence, peace, or purpose. It’s less about seeing the future and more about hearing God’s heart for a person or situation.

2. It Edifies, Exhorts, and Comforts

This is the primary purpose of the New Testament prophetic gift. Your “words” or insights should ultimately build people up, call them closer to God, or bring comfort in a time of distress. It leads to hope, not horror.

  • What it looks like: You feel led to tell a struggling single mother, “God sees your faithfulness, and He is your provider in ways you can’t yet see.”
  • What it’s not: Predicting doom and gloom without any redemptive purpose, like “I see a great financial crash coming for you, and you will lose everything.”

3. It Aligns with Scripture

God will never contradict His own Word. A genuine prophetic insight will always align with the principles and truths of the Bible. It won’t tell someone to leave their spouse for another person or to do something unethical, because that goes against God’s character.

  • What it looks like: You have an insight about someone needing to forgive, which aligns with Matthew 6:14-15.
  • What it’s not: Getting a “word” that someone’s success is tied to cheating on a business deal or that someone’s breakthrough is tied to disobeying God’s commandments.

4. It Is Often Confirmed

When you receive a genuine word from God, there is often a confirmation. The person you share it with may say, “That’s exactly what I’ve been praying about!” or the situation may unfold exactly as you sensed. This confirmation brings clarity and affirms that it was from God.

  • What it looks like: You tell someone you see them “leading a group of people.” They later share that they felt God calling them to start a small group but were too afraid.
  • What it’s not: A vague feeling that something “might” happen, with no clear meaning or confirmation.

5. You Feel a Compelling Burden to Pray or Speak

A genuine prophetic word often comes with a sense of divine urgency or a “burden” from the Lord. It’s not something you casually think up; it’s something you feel compelled by the Holy Spirit to pray about or share often with a sense of love and responsibility.

  • What it looks like: You can’t get a specific person off your mind and feel a strong urge to pray for their protection, only to find out they were in a near-accident that day.
  • What it’s not: casually thinking, “It would be nice if Jane got a new job.”

6. It Produces Humility, Not Pride

The true gift of prophecy is about pointing people to Jesus, not to yourself. If your “words” make you feel spiritually superior, special, or cause you to draw a crowd to yourself, it’s a red flag. A genuine gift makes you feel humble and in awe of God’s goodness.

  • What it looks like: After sharing a word that powerfully impacts someone, you think, “Wow, God is so good to use someone like me.”
  • What it’s not: Thinking, “I am so spiritual and powerful. People need to listen to me.”

7. It Stands the Test of Accountability

A true prophetic gift is willing to be tested. You should be able to share what you’re sensing with mature, spiritual leaders in your life without getting defensive. As 1 John 4:1 says, “test every spirit.” A humble heart says, “This is what I feel God is saying; what do you think?”

  • What it looks like: You go to a pastor or small group leader and say, “I’ve been having these impressions, and I’d like your wisdom to see if this is from God.”
  • What it’s not: Keeping your “revelations” secret and refusing to let anyone question or weigh them.

Your Next Steps

If you see these signs in your life, you may very well have a prophetic gifting. So, what should you do?

  1. Pursue the Giver, Not the Gift: Focus on deepening your relationship with Jesus above all else.
  2. Start Small: Begin by sharing encouraging words with friends and family in a low-pressure way.
  3. Stay Humble and Teachable: Always be willing to learn and be corrected.

The prophetic gift is a beautiful tool in God’s hands to bring hope and direction. If He has given it to you, nurture it with prayer, humility, and a heart that seeks only to build up His church.
